[NIGERIA]. — CROWDER (Michael), ed. — Independent Nigeria. A special issue of Nigeria Magazine dedicated to Independence. Lagos, Nigeria Magazine; printed in Amsterdam by C. A. Spin & Zoon N.V., 1962. Large quarto, paperback, with an illustrated photographic cover; profusely illustrated with black-and-white photographs and documents devoted to Nigeria, its history, its people, its economy, and its arts. Editor: Michael Crowder. Co-editors: L. O. Ukeje and Onuora Nzekwu. Typesetting: H. H. Jones. French edition of the special issue published by Nigeria Magazine on the occasion of Nigeria’s independence. The original English version is linked to the 1960 special issue; this French adaptation was published in 1962. The bibliography of the Pierre Verger Foundation confirms, in particular, the inclusion in this French edition of the article “Nigeria, Brazil, and Cuba,” pp. 125–135. An important publication from the immediate postcolonial period, offering a particularly rich overview of the young Nigerian state: history, institutions, economy, archaeology, ethnography, traditional arts, and peoples. Nigeria Magazine played a notable role during this period in documenting and disseminating Nigerian culture and the arts. Copy with an autograph dedication on the half-title page. A good copy considering the fragility of the publication. Cover intact, with scuffing, small creases, marks, and marginal wear; spine and corners slightly worn. Interior generally clean. Small old pencil notation “80” on the half-title page.
