VIGNY (Alfred, de). Born in Loches. 1797–1863. Writer, poet, and playwright. Autograph letter signed “Cte Alfred de Vigny” to the Marquis de Torcy. No place, April 19, 1847. 3 1/4 pages, in-8. ...You ask me (...) to enlighten you regarding the talent and works of Mr. Pître-Chevalier, your relative..., whose works he deems unnecessary to recount here, limiting himself to saying: ...“Considering his body of work as a whole, I must tell you that they are the work of a steadfast and diligent mind and an excellent writer. That extensive and painstaking scholarship has been the foundation of his historical works, which are the most significant of his writings. That sentiments of honor and enlightened patriotism, a scholarly observation of the region, and a thorough knowledge of ancient chronicles and contemporary events provide a strong and sound foundation for this great and enduring work on Brittany and its inhabitants (...). I believe that this dual history of Brittany and the Vendée will remain among our finest historical monuments, and the author’s character—his serious and honorable life—as well as his still relatively young age, serve as a sure guarantee of the excellent works that will follow (...).
