VÉRON, Louis-Désiré. (Paris, 1798–1867) Physician, journalist, and politician; director of the Paris Opera and a leading figure in the press during the July Monarchy. Autograph letter signed “Véron,” addressed to Jules Guérin. [No place], December 10, 1840. 1 page, folio. An interesting letter concerning the world of journalism and the dissemination of scientific and medical ideas in the 19th century. Véron recommends to his correspondent, the physician Jules Guérin, the publication of an article in the *Gazette médicale de Paris*, an influential journal of which Guérin is the founder and editor. He supports the request of a third party, a “friend and neighbor,” by highlighting the text’s merits: “I find it well-conceived and well-written,” and stresses the value of giving it “publicity,” highlighting the journal’s role as an intellectual arbiter and source of influence. This letter illustrates the mechanisms of recommendation and the networks of influence between the press, the medical community, and intellectual circles during the July Monarchy.
