POUCHET (Georges, Charles, Henri). Born in Rouen. 1833–1894. Naturalist and friend of Guy de Maupassant, who dedicated his short story *La mère sauvage* to him in 1884. 2 handwritten letters and 1 postcard signed “G. Pouchet” to Mr. Noël, director of the Rouen Municipal Library. Paris, February 27, 1889, and undated, undated location. 2 pages in-12 and 4 pages in-16. Enclosed: 1 handwritten letter on Museum letterhead. CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN TWO SCHOLARS ON THE SUBJECT OF FISH FARMING: “Favorable conditions,” exclaims Pouchet, delighted with the trout experiments, … I’ll remind you of the main point: a dozen small and medium-sized trout at my disposal. None will be destroyed (Good heavens! A pun!). In some random stream, I will have a sort of trough set up for three or four days, made of three loosely joined planks through which water will flow. The trough will be held in place by a rope or stones without the need to drive any stakes into the ground. I’ll have the trough made, of course. And I’ll go check on the fish for three or four hours a day for three or four days—that’s all...- Pouchet informs his friend of the upcoming publication of his work on trout. He adds... “Yes, the Museum’s lectures have been published, and I very much hope that on your next trip you’ll come see my laboratory, which is superb...”- Pouchet asks his friend for the address of a fish farmer. He adds... “We’ll discuss all of this further, and I plan to visit him on my way back from Rouen, where I believe I’ll have the pleasure of shaking your hand...”In the enclosed letter: Pouchet asks him to “serve as my interpreter in thanking the Normandy Geographical Society for the honor it has bestowed upon me by appointing me an honorary member...”
