ORFILA (Mathieu) — Anne Gabrielle LESUEUR, his wife Paris, 1793–1864. Musician, daughter of the sculptor Jean-Philippe Lesueur. Autograph letter signed “Gᵐᵉ Orfila,” addressed to Monsieur Corelli. No place, no date. 1 page, in-8. (Subscription.) A charming thank-you letter in which Madame Orfila expresses, in a tone of great elegance, her gratitude to her correspondent for an artistic experience she clearly enjoyed: “A thousand thanks (…) for all the pleasure you have given us.” She delicately inquires about any fatigue that the performance may have caused and, in return, conveys the couple’s compliments and admiration for their correspondent’s “charming talent.” This letter attests to the artistic and social circles surrounding the famous physician Mathieu Orfila and his wife, in a milieu where music and cultural exchanges play an important role.
