MIRÓ (Joan). Born in Barcelona (Spain). 1893–1983. Painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramic artist. L.A. (lower portion cut off) to Nelson Fuqua. Palma de Mallorca (Balearic Islands, Majorca), April 30, 1962. 1 page, in-4 format, on cream-colored vellum addressed to him. Stamped envelope (postage stamp and postmarks) with his address printed on the back (trace of a erased drawing in the upper left corner of the letter). Miró announces his arrival in Paris: it was in 1962 that the major retrospective of the Catalan painter’s work was held in Paris at the Musée d’Art Moderne …We will be in Paris in early June; my wife and I would be delighted to meet with you. We have great affection for the Casadesus family and look forward to seeing them. We are also very happy to meet Orson Welles, for whom I have great admiration… Miró maintained a regular correspondence with Nelson Fuqua, who lived in Chicago, in the United States. The Casadesus family, Catalan émigrés in the early 20th century, included many musicians, among them Robert Casadesus (1899–1972), the famous pianist who had been a friend of Ravel’s. The painter had chosen the island of Mallorca as a refuge during the war of 1940. What was meant to be a temporary stay became (beginning in 1956) his permanent residence. He asked his friend, the painter and interior designer Joseph Lluis Sert (who had been married to the beautiful and famous Misia Natanson), to build him a spacious studio where he devoted himself primarily to creating ceramics and prints.
