MICHAUD (Joseph-François). (1767–1839) French historian, member of the Académie française, author of the famous *History of the Crusades*. Important letter concerning a planned trip to the East and the study of the Crusades A beautiful and lengthy letter in which Michaud sets forth, with great intellectual depth, his plan for a trip to the East, conceived as a scholarly mission as much as a personal one. Responding to a request for a “note” from his correspondent, he develops a line of thought marked by remarkable intellectual modesty, first acknowledging the limits of his knowledge of the countries he intends to explore, before considering the meaning and purpose of his undertaking. His objective is clearly stated: “I am going to seek out the traces of the French knights—those of Godfrey, Louis VII, Louis IX… ” He intends to gather the materials necessary for a historical geography of the Crusades, which he still considers incomplete despite advances in knowledge in Europe: “…to compile a geography of the Crusades that cannot be complete with the resources and insights we now have in France and Europe. ” Far from any excessive personal ambition, he emphasizes the scholarly nature of his project, hoping to produce a work useful “to scholars” above all, while refusing to claim any service rendered to the state. He also refers to his role models, notably the travelers and scholars who preceded him, implicitly citing the great scholarly expeditions of the Ancien Régime, and places himself within a tradition of scholarly research grounded in direct observation.
