MASSON (Frédéric). - Lot 203
MASSON (Frédéric).
(1847–1923)
French historian, specialist in the First Empire, member of the Académie française.
Autograph letter signed “Frédéric Masson.”
Viarme(s) (Seine-et-Oise), August 31, 1900.
2 pages, in-12 format, on letterhead printed “Clos des Fées.”
An interesting letter of a historical and biographical nature.
Masson responds to a request for information regarding Pusy and discusses at length the possible connections to the Borghese family, particularly within the circle of Pauline Bonaparte, Napoleon’s sister.
He states that he has found no conclusive evidence in his research, while offering a nuanced analysis of the numerous relationships attributed to Pauline. He notes in particular that her personal papers provide a fairly accurate picture of her life, without any notable concealment, and that no corresponding names appear in her correspondence or archives.
This letter is revealing of the historian’s critical method and his work on the imperial family.
Beautiful cursive handwriting, clear signature.
