LAFFITTE (Jacques). Born in Bayonne in 1767—died in 1844. French banker and politician, governor of the Bank of France, liberal member of parliament, a key figure in the July Revolution, and president of the Council under Louis-Philippe. Autograph letter signed “J. Laffitte,” addressed to a gentleman. Paris, October 8, 1834. 1 page, in-8 format. Address on the reverse; traces of postmarks. A letter of circumstance in which Jacques Laffitte, about to leave Paris for a trip to the Vendée and Brittany, apologizes for a delay he cannot avoid. He promises, however, to keep his correspondent informed of his return and to devote the necessary time to him, also mentioning his connections with contacts in Rouen. This note, simple in appearance, attests to the intense pace of Laffitte’s political and financial activities in the years following the Revolution of 1830, as well as to his networks of influence in the provinces. It illustrates the daily correspondence of a leading figure in the July Monarchy, torn between political commitments and personal obligations. Autograph signature.
