JULIENNE (Madame). - Lot 151
JULIENNE (Madame).
HAUTE COUTURE — Madame JULIENNE
fashion designer for Paul Poiret and Robert Piguet
Autograph letter signed “Your old Julienne,” addressed to Bernard Grasset
Paris, Tuesday, May 13, undated [1930s].
1½ folio pages, on large Robert Piguet Art Deco letterhead, Champs-Élysées, Paris.
A few spots and minor foxing on the reverse, nothing serious.
A touching and beautiful letter from the fashion designer, written on paper from the famous Robert Piguet fashion house, in thanks for a dedication in one of Grasset’s books.
The tone is deeply intimate:
“Thank you for the book and the such a heartfelt dedication”
and quickly becomes very personal, almost romantic:
“We all carry an angel and a demon within us”
“How are your love affairs going?”
The letter blends sentimental musings, reflections on human nature, and more intimate observations on her parents’ advancing age and the passage of time:
“I found them looking quite aged”
The letter concludes on a delicately melancholic and affectionate note:
“Don’t forget… I send you my love and am still your old Julienne”
A beautiful testament to the connections between the worlds of Parisian haute couture and literary publishing.
A particularly captivating piece due to the quality of the writing and the superb letterhead.
