HENRI-ROBERT. Paris, 1863–1936. French lawyer and historian, elected to the Académie française in 1923. Autograph note signed and autograph letter signed “Henri-Robert,” addressed to “Monsieur le Président.” Paris, undated. Set of 2 pieces: ½ page in-12 and 1 page 1/3 in-8, on letterhead bearing his Paris address and that of the Paris Court of Appeals Bar Association. An interesting set of correspondence illustrating the courteous yet measured tone of one of the most brilliant lawyers of the Belle Époque and the interwar period. The autograph note takes the form of a concise and elegant expression of thanks: “My warmest and most respectful thanks,” characteristic of the author’s formal restraint. The letter expands on this sentiment by expressing sincere gratitude following a tribute paid to a colleague, as well as flattering remarks addressed to Henri-Robert himself. With modesty tinged with finesse, he describes himself as “flattered and grateful,” attributing the praise received not to his own merits but to the “kind friendship” of his correspondent. A leading figure in the Paris bar, renowned for his oratory skills in major criminal cases, Henri-Robert was also a recognized historian and the author of numerous works, which lends this collection both legal and literary significance.
