HAAS (Eugène Lachat, known as Bishop Haas). Boécourt, 1819 – Lucerne, 1888 Swiss prelate, Bishop of Basel, a leading figure in 19th-century Swiss Catholicism, involved in the tensions between the Church and civil authorities during the Kulturkampf. Autograph letter signed “+ Eugène, Bishop of Basel” to a parish priest (probably in France) Lucerne, May 16, 1874 4 pages in-4, on letterhead printed “Diocese of Basel,” folded. A long and remarkable letter written from the bishop’s exile in Lucerne, where he was forced to leave his see amid the political and religious conflicts in Switzerland. Addressing the recipient respectfully as “Dear Parish Priest,” he recalls the bonds of friendship forged through mutual acquaintances and thanks his correspondent for offering hospitality to priests from his diocese who were victims of repressive measures: “among those whom Bernese tyranny has outlawed.” The text offers a poignant reflection on the situation of the Swiss clergy: “elderly men who have spent 30 or 40 years in parish ministry […] have sacrificed everything for the faith”. He emphasizes the sacrifices made by both the priests and the faithful, and commends the latter to his correspondent’s prayers. The letter serves as a direct and moving account of the Swiss Kulturkampf, illustrating the persecutions endured by the Catholic clergy and the international solidarity that was taking shape at the time.
