GOUNOD (Charles).
Born in Paris. 1818–1893. French composer.
Autograph letter signed “Ch. Gounod” to “My dear Hartmann” (music publisher Georges Hartmann). No place (Paris), March 27, 1888. 2 pp. 1/3 in-8.
...The Cardinal Archbishop of Reims is deeply concerned about the rehearsals for the Mass and is beginning to harbor serious fears about the performance, due to the enormous delay in sending the vocal parts (...). Think about it, my dear; you are jeopardizing the future of this Mass: the rehearsals will be inadequate and the performance poor. I repeat, think about it. This is serious!...In July 1887, Gounod had already conducted his Mass in Memory of Joan of Arc, preceded by a fanfare prelude, in Reims Cathedral.
