GIGNIAUT (Joseph). - Lot 125
GIGNIAUT (Joseph). Born in Paray-le-Monial in 1794—died in 1876. French Hellenist, member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. Autograph letter signed “Gigniaut,” addressed to “Monsieur.” No place, [circa 19th century]. 1 page, small 12mo. A short business letter concerning academic work. In it, Gigniaut states that he presented his correspondent’s name to the Academy during a recent session, while requesting a bibliographic detail he considers essential: a missing date regarding a work. He urges his correspondent to provide this information before the session on January 4, in order to properly complete the review of the file. This note provides insight into the internal workings of learned academies in the 19th century, where scholarly accuracy and the verification of sources were fundamental requirements in the evaluation of works and candidacies. Autograph signature.
