GARNIER (Jules) GARNIER, Jule. (Saint-Étienne, 1839–1904) French engineer, explorer, historian, and ethnologist. Autograph letter signed “J. Garnier,” addressed to Madame Liouville. No place, no date. 1½ pages, in-12 format. A friendly and social note in which Jules Garnier invites his correspondent to a concert: “Please allow me to offer you a ticket to next Sunday’s concert, which features the same program as last Sunday’s. I hope you will be able to attend.” This short letter reflects the social customs of educated circles in the late 19th century, where invitations and exchanges of courtesy were a natural part of personal relationships. It is of particular interest because of the signature of Jules Garnier, a mining engineer in New Caledonia, the discoverer of garniérite—an important nickel ore—and a key figure in the development of its industrial mining operations. Alongside his scientific career, Garnier was also a writer and an active member of the Paris Geographical Society. A modest document, yet representative of the social networks of a 19th-century scholar-explorer.
