DUNOYER (Charles). Born in 1786—died in 1862. Economist and member of the Council of State. Autograph letter signed “Dunoyer,” addressed to the president of an academy. No place, no date (Thursday, June 7). 2/3 of an in-8 page. An interesting letter concerning the work of the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences. In it, Dunoyer discusses a competition on the “dangerous classes in Paris and other major European capitals,” for which he has been appointed rapporteur. He specifies that his report has already been read in committee and is to be presented to the Academy at the next session, his presence there being deemed essential. Compelled by this obligation, he informs his correspondent that he will be unable to attend the meeting of their own Academy. This document sheds light on the intellectual and social debates of the nineteenth century surrounding the issue of the urban working classes, a major theme in the liberal and administrative thought of the time.
