LAW [LAW THESIS - BOURGES] - Lot 97
LAW [LAW THESIS - BOURGES] LAW [LAW THESIS - BOURGES]. DEO OPT. MAX. VIRGINIQUE MATRI. Ad consequendam in utroque jure licentiatum lauream. Typographic poster, Bourges (Bituriges), June 6, 1789. Printed by Bartholomaeus Cristo, printer to the Academy. 1 folio sheet (approx. 45 x 35 cm), printed in two columns with a border and ornate initials. A rare and interesting thesis poster in civil and canon law, defended in 1789, on the eve of the revolutionary upheavals. The text, written entirely in Latin, presents a series of legal positions concerning, in particular: - corporate law (Societas et contractus), - obligations and liabilities, - ecclesiastical revenues (Census), - the rights and prerogatives of religious and civil authorities. The defense took place “in publico J.U. auditorio” under the chairmanship of Henricus Franciscus Xavier Haslay, with academic witnesses present, in accordance with the university customs of the Ancien Régime. Beautiful late 18th-century typography, with engraved initials and a layout characteristic of university posters. Condition: Handled sheet, minor damage to the corners, marginal marks and soiling, old creases, with no notable missing text.
