COMTE (Jules). Born in Paris, 1846—died in 1912. Art critic, Inspector General of the Schools of Decorative Arts, Director of Civil Buildings, and founder in 1897 of *La Revue de l’Art ancien et moderne*. Autograph letter signed “Jules Comte.” Paris, September 10, 1881. 3 pages (¼ in-8). An interesting letter regarding an appeal on behalf of a certain Mr. Beyer. In it, Jules Comte candidly discusses the difficulties encountered in the appointment process for art teachers, noting that his administration is limited to presenting candidates to the municipalities, which retain the final decision-making authority. He apologizes for a delay attributed to an “apparent negligence” on the part of his staff, while highlighting the obstacles encountered, particularly those related to the candidate’s age and lack of teaching experience.
