CHARLES PHILIPPE OF FRANCE (1757–1836). Count of Artois, who became King of France and Navarre under the name Charles X. National Guard commission, printed (Didot), partially printed and signed “Charles Philippe,” “The Duke of Montmorency,” “Count Dessolle” (initials). Paris, October 1, 1815. Oblong in-plano vellum. Beautiful engraved border. Seal bearing the coat of arms under the paper. Certificate issued to Hypolite Louvet, born in Paris on December 20, 1797, notary clerk and soldier in the 1st Company of the Legion. The document grants the recipient the right to wear the Lily decoration, the emblematic insignia of the Restoration, awarded to the Paris National Guard: “… to the recipient the right to wear the Lily decoration as it was awarded to the Paris National Guard… ” An important artifact from the First Restoration and the policy of securing the loyalty of civil and military bodies following the fall of the Empire. The joint presence of the printed signatures of Charles Philippe (the future Charles X) and high-ranking dignitaries reinforces the historical significance of the document, which is emblematic of the transitional period between the Empire and the restored Monarchy.
