BUGEAUD (Thomas Robert). Born in Limoges. 1784–1849. Marshal of France, Governor-General of Algeria. Letter from “Bugeaud” to “My dear Mr. de Bourcy.” Exideuil, February 5, 1841. 1 p. in-4. Bugeaud recommends a certain Mr. Lucien Rey: …You promised me that you would take all the more care of my protégés while I am away. I am already as good as in Africa, for I am leaving in a few days; but before I do, I wish to ask you to promote Mr. Lucien Rey, a clerk in Auxerre. I believe he has 5 or 6 years of service. He belongs to one of the best families in Exideuil, whom I am very keen to help (…) I have just achieved a magnificent victory in my election against all the combined and relentless opposition seeking to overthrow the jailer of Blaye and the murderer of Rue Transnonain. Every possible maneuver was employed against me… Bugeaud is referring to the time when he was governor of the citadel of Blaye during the imprisonment of the Duchess of Berry, and to the violent suppression of the riots of 1834.
