BERVILLE (Albin de, known as Saint-Albin). Born in Amiens in 1788—died in 1868. French magistrate and politician, member of the National Assembly, known in particular as a defender of Paul-Louis Courier and Béranger. Autograph letter signed “Berville,” addressed to Mr. Guillaume, secretary of the King’s Cabinet. No place, February 2, 1831. 1 page, in-12 square format. Address on the reverse. A brief but significant letter of recommendation written at the beginning of the July Monarchy, in which Berville supports the candidacy or position of Mrs. Legris, whom he describes as “a worthy and excellent woman.” This note illustrates the practice of providing recommendations in the administrative and political circles of the time, when personal connections and written interventions played an essential role.
