VIVANTE AFRIQUE.
Uganda, Land of Martyrs.
Revue générale des Missions d'Afrique, No. 217, November–December 1961.
Brussels, White Fathers of Africa, 1961. In-4, illustrated paperback.
A special issue of the journal *Vivante Afrique* devoted entirely to Uganda, published a few months before the country’s independence (1962). The volume opens with an editorial by Bishop Joseph Kiwanuka, the first African Catholic bishop of the Latin Rite appointed in sub-Saharan Africa and a leading figure in the Ugandan Church.
The volume covers the history of the Kingdom of Buganda, evangelization, missionary education, the emerging political life, and the role of the missions in the country’s development. It is richly illustrated with black-and-white photographs as well as a few color plates, offering a first-rate visual record of Uganda on the eve of its independence.
The cover features an official portrait of Milton Obote, then Prime Minister and future first President of the Republic of Uganda.
Condition: good copy, slight wear on the cover.
