VARIAN FRY. Varian Fry. Marseille: Actes Sud, 1999. Large quarto, publisher’s hardcover with illustrated dust jacket. An important volume published on the occasion of the international symposium held in Marseille on March 19 and 20, 1999, dedicated to Varian Fry (1907–1967), an American journalist whose efforts, between 1940 and 1941, the rescue of several thousand refugees threatened by the Nazi regime. The volume brings together the proceedings of the two-day symposium under the titles *Varian Fry: From Refuge…* and *Varian Fry …to Exile*, reproduced in full at the end of the volume, as well as an extensive collection of images consisting of photographs, archival documents, correspondence, passports, posters, and testimonies relating to the rescue network established in Marseille. It features the key figures saved or assisted by Fry—André Breton, Max Ernst, Victor Serge, Marc Chagall, Hannah Arendt, Lion Feuchtwanger, Jacques Lipchitz, among many others—as well as the history of the American Rescue Center, the escape routes to Spain and Portugal, and the pivotal role played by Marseille as the capital of intellectual exile during the Occupation. A reference work on Varian Fry’s humanitarian efforts, bringing together historians, eyewitnesses, and specialists, and illustrated with numerous reproductions that are often difficult to find elsewhere. Condition: Good copy. Dust jacket shows some scuffing and small marginal tears, particularly along the top spine, but nothing serious; interior is in very fresh condition.
