ULLMAN (Doris Bry). The Model Wife. New York, Bulfinch Press / Museum of Photographic Arts, 1989. Large quarto, publisher's gray full cloth binding, illustrated dust jacket. An important monograph devoted to the work of American photographer Doris Ulmann (1882–1934), a major figure in late Pictorialism and portrait photography. The book brings together a vast collection of high-quality reproductions, accompanied by essays on her career as well as her collaborations with American artists, writers, and intellectuals. Special attention is given to her husband, Dr. Charles H. Jaeger, who served as her model, her support, and one of the key contributors to her photographic work. The photographs span the various periods of her work: portraits of artists and writers, garden scenes, female figures, rural communities in the Appalachians, artisans, musicians, and people of the Southern United States. This publication is now considered one of the essential references on Doris Ulmann and on American pictorialist photography from the first third of the 20th century. Condition: good copy. Dust jacket shows slight handling with subtle signs of wear; cloth binding in good condition; pages fresh.
