Official catalog of the major exhibition organized by the Musée d’Orsay in collaboration with the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, devoted to the visual art of the great Swedish writer August Strindberg (1849–1912). While Strindberg remains universally known as a playwright and novelist, this volume sheds light on a long-overlooked aspect of his creative output: the painting, photography, graphic experiments, and visual explorations he pursued alongside his literary work. Richly illustrated in color and black-and-white, the catalog reproduces all of his major pictorial series (seascapes, visionary landscapes, “celestographies”), as well as his photographs, drawings, manuscripts, and studio documents. The essays trace the deep connections between his literary imagination and his visual explorations, demonstrating how his work foreshadowed certain developments in Expressionism, Abstraction, and even Surrealism.
