An elegant volume from the “Masters of Photography” collection, dedicated to Alfred Stieglitz (1864–1946), a major figure in American photography and one of the key architects of its recognition as an art form in its own right. Founder of the magazines *Camera Notes* and, more notably, *Camera Work*, and curator of the famous 291 galleries in New York, Stieglitz was the discoverer and champion of artists such as Rodin, Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso, and Brancusi, while also bringing to light the photographers of the “Photo-Secession.” His personal body of work—ranging from winter views of New York to the clouds in *The Equivalents* and the famous portraits of Georgia O’Keeffe—marks the transition from Pictorialism to a resolutely modern form of photography. With an introduction by Dorothy Norman, a close collaborator and interpreter of the photographer’s work, this volume brings together a rich selection of annotated reproductions spanning his entire career, accompanied by a chronology and a biographical note.
