French first edition of this remarkable photographic reportage devoted to the People’s Republic of China a few years after the 1949 revolution. Swiss photographer and journalist Peter Schmid traveled throughout the country and produced a richly illustrated account featuring 110 heliogravure photographs, accompanied by a fold-out map of his itinerary.
The book documents Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, the Yangtze River, the countryside, the people’s communes, ports, markets, transportation, historic sites, and daily life, offering a record that has now become a historical document on China in the 1950s.

Condition: Complete copy with its fold-out map. Publisher’s cloth binding in good condition. Dust jacket missing, replaced by a modern protective sleeve. A few creases and scattered small foxing spots on the first few pages, as well as some signs of wear; interior clean overall.
