SALGADO (Sebastião). - Lot 261
SALGADO (Sebastião). Exodes. Concept and design by Lélia Wanick Salgado. Paris, Éditions de La Martinière, 2000. Large folio, publisher’s hardcover with illustrated dust jacket. French first edition of one of Sebastião Salgado’s major works, published following more than six years of reporting on contemporary human migration. Bringing together nearly four hundred exceptionally powerful black-and-white photographs, the book documents the forced displacement of populations, refugees, economic migrants, megacities, and the social upheavals that marked the end of the 20th century. Divided into several geographic and thematic sections, *Exodes* constitutes, along with *La Main de l’homme* (*Workers*) and *Genesis*, one of the three major series that established Salgado’s international reputation. The layout, designed by Lélia Wanick Salgado, is remarkably understated, highlighting the monumental scale of the images and reinforcing the project’s humanistic scope. A seminal work that has become emblematic of contemporary documentary photography, it has left a profound mark on the history of the photography book. Condition: very good copy; hardcover and dust jacket in excellent condition, with slight superficial signs of wear.
