A collection published by Reporters Without Borders on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, featuring one hundred photographs by Sebastião Salgado, one of the leading figures in contemporary documentary photography. The introductory texts, notably by Jean Lacouture, place the photographer’s work within its humanistic context and highlight his commitment to the most disadvantaged populations. The book brings together several of Salgado’s most famous images, taken during his major photojournalistic projects in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Through the power of their composition and the dignity they bestow upon their subjects, these photographs bear witness to the migrations, labor, poverty, conflicts, and social upheavals that marked the end of the 20th century. Like all photo books published by Reporters Without Borders, this volume was sold to benefit the organization’s efforts to defend press freedom, making it one of the first iconic volumes in this collection, which has since become a benchmark.
