An important reprint of the major collection devoted to the studies of animal movement conducted by Eadweard Muybridge (1830–1904), a pioneer of scientific photography and a forerunner of cinema. Beginning in 1878, using a setup of cameras triggered in succession, Muybridge demonstrated for the first time the different phases of animal locomotion, notably the horse’s gallop, revolutionizing scientific knowledge, the artistic representation of movement, and the history of the moving image. The book brings together 183 plates devoted to more than thirty species—horses, dogs, cats, lions, kangaroos, deer, birds, big cats, camels, etc. — reproducing more than 4,000 photographs from the famous series produced at the University of Pennsylvania between 1884 and 1887. Each sequence breaks down with remarkable precision the different phases of walking, running, jumping, or flying, constituting essential documentation for historians of photography as well as for artists, anatomists, veterinarians, and filmmakers. Published by Dover Publications, this volume remains the most famous edition of Muybridge’s work. It played a major role in the mid-20th-century rediscovery of the decisive influence his work had on Marcel Duchamp, Francis Bacon, the Futurists, animators, and the entire field of research dedicated to the representation of movement.
