A volume in the “Les Maîtres de la Photographie” series dedicated to Dorothea Lange (1895–1965), one of the greatest figures in American documentary photography. Hired by the Farm Security Administration (FSA) during the Great Depression, Lange produced some of the most famous images of the 20th century, including *Migrant Mother* (1936), which has become a universal symbol of the American economic crisis. Her work bears witness, with exceptional human power, to the plight of farmworkers, migrants, displaced populations, and, later, Japanese-American citizens interned during World War II. With an introduction by Christopher Cox, this book traces the major milestones of her career and brings together a representative selection of her most significant photographs, in which documentary power is combined with deep empathy for her subjects. An excellent introductory volume to the work of a photographer who profoundly revitalized social documentary photography. A very fine copy.
