Organized by the Centre Georges-Pompidou in 1982, this exhibition helped introduce a generation of photographers from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, and many other countries on the continent to a European audience. The book features several hundred works reproduced in black and white, accompanied by biographical notes and critical essays that place Latin American photography within its political, social, and artistic context—one marked by military dictatorships, revolutionary movements, urban transformation, and profound social inequalities. Among the photographers featured are Manuel Álvarez Bravo, Graciela Iturbide, Sebastião Salgado (in his early career), Paolo Gasparini, Pedro Meyer, Sergio Larraín, Horacio Coppola, Marcos Zimmermann, Luis González Palma, and many other artists who have since become major figures in the field.
