LA DOCUMENTATION FRANÇAISE. - Lot 161
LA DOCUMENTATION FRANÇAISE.
Prehistory in France. Photographic Documentation, File No. 5,257. Paris, La Documentation française, 1965. In-4, loose-leaf in the publisher’s illustrated folder.
An important educational dossier published by La Documentation française, devoted to the state of knowledge regarding French prehistory in the mid-1960s. Designed as a working tool for teaching and scientific dissemination, it combines a summary text with a collection of black-and-white and color photographic plates depicting the main prehistoric sites, remains, and discoveries in France.
The particularly extensive illustrations include views of archaeological excavations, Paleolithic and Neolithic settlements, flint tools, portable art objects, cave paintings, as well as reproductions of some of the most famous human fossils, notably those from La Chapelle-aux-Saints and Cro-Magnon. The photographs, taken by the French Documentation Service and numerous scientific organizations, constitute a remarkable record of French archaeological documentation from this period.
A complete copy with its folder and plates, but heavily worn: the folder is heavily scuffed with tears, the spine was previously reinforced, the headband and edges are worn, and the plates show minor signs of wear. Sold as is.
