KRULL (Germaine). SUARÈS (André). - Lot 155
KRULL (Germaine). SUARÈS (André).
Marseille. Marseille, Éditions Jeanne Laffitte, [circa 1988].
Large quarto, illustrated hardcover by the publisher.
A large-format reprint of one of Germaine Krull’s (1897–1985) most famous photography books, first published in 1929 as part of the “Les Albums des Visages de la France” series. This work is now considered one of the major milestones in modern French photography.
Through a remarkable series of images of the harbor, basins, quays, tugboats, cranes, docks, warehouses, and everyday life in Marseille, Germaine Krull composes a portrait of this Mediterranean city in which the aesthetic of the Nouvelle Vision is fully expressed. The bold framing, low-angle shots, industrial silhouettes, and play of light lend the port infrastructure exceptional graphic power, making Marseille a symbol of mechanical and maritime modernity.
The photographs are accompanied by text by André Suarès, whose lyrical prose resonates powerfully with Krull’s visual world. The volume faithfully captures the spirit of the original book while offering high-quality reproductions of the images that have become emblematic of the photographer’s work.
A definitive reissue of an essential photobook, sought after both for Germaine Krull’s historical significance and for Marseille’s prominent place in the history of 20th-century photography books.
