KOLLAR (François). France at Work: A Look at the 1930s. Paris, City of Paris – Forney Library (Hôtel de Sens), 1985. Large quarto, paperback with illustrated cover. Catalog of the exhibition held at the Forney Library from October 3 to November 16, 1985, dedicated to the great Slovak-born photographer François Kollar (1904–1979), one of the leading figures in French industrial and social photography of the interwar period. The book chronicles the famous photographic survey *La France travaille* (1931–1934), a vast documentary project conducted across France’s industrial, agricultural, and artisanal sectors. The reproductions feature, among other things, blast furnaces, mines, the Penhoët shipyards, the construction of the ocean liner *Normandie*, railroads, glassworks, factories, workshops, and rural life. The captions specify the original negatives, print sizes, and films used, making this book a first-rate documentary source. Extensive heliogravure illustrations reproducing numerous original prints, including several previously unpublished photographs. Condition: cover slightly yellowed with some signs of wear and slight creases at the corners; a few scattered marks and foxing spots on the back cover; interior fresh and very clean. A fine copy.
