KINCSES (Károly).
Photographers. Made in Hungary. Arles / Milan, Actes Sud - Motta, Hungarian Museum of Photography, 1998.
Large in-4 format, illustrated publisher’s cardboard binding.
A comprehensive overview of Hungary’s major contribution to the history of 20th-century photography. Károly Kincses, a photography historian and director of the Hungarian Museum of Photography in Kecskemét, traces the careers of photographers born in Hungary, whether they pursued their careers in their home country or went on to work in Paris, Berlin, London, or New York.
The book features more than sixty photographers, including André Kertész, Brassaï, Robert Capa, Cornell Capa, László Moholy-Nagy, Martin Munkácsi, Nicolas Müller, Lucien Hervé, Nora Dumas, Ergy Landau, Emeric Fehér, Ata Kandó, as well as numerous photographers who remain less well-known outside of Hungary. Each biographical entry is accompanied by high-quality reproductions, allowing readers to appreciate the decisive influence of this “Hungarian school” on humanist photography, photojournalism, the avant-garde, advertising photography, and architectural photography.
With its historical and biographical approach, this book serves as an excellent introduction to a unique cultural phenomenon: the global dispersion of Hungarian photographers, many of whom rank among the greatest names in modern photography.
