KERTÉSZ (André). Moments of a Life. Paris, Bookking International, [circa 1985–1990]. Large quarto, publisher’s hardcover with illustrated dust jacket. A beautiful monograph dedicated to André Kertész (1894–1985), one of the great masters of 20th-century photography. Conceived as a comprehensive retrospective, it brings together several hundred photographs spanning his entire career, from his earliest images taken in Hungary before World War I to his Parisian works from 1925 to 1936, and on to his long period in New York. The volume traces the evolution of a vision that profoundly influenced modern photography. Parisian street scenes, portraits of artists, still lifes, urban views, geometric compositions, and the famous “Distortions” series all reflect an instantly recognizable photographic style, rooted in simplicity, the balance of forms, and the poetry of everyday life. Long admired by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Brassaï, Robert Capa, and Robert Doisneau, Kertész remains today one of the key figures in humanist and modern photography. The book is lavishly illustrated with high-quality heliogravures and is one of the best overviews published in French on the photographer’s work.
