A beautiful photo book dedicated to New York, as seen through the lens of American photographer Don Hunstein (1928–2017), one of the great visual chroniclers of America from the 1950s to the 1970s. Best known for his photographs taken for Columbia Records—where he captured images of Bob Dylan, Glenn Gould, Leonard Bernstein, Miles Davis, Johnny Cash, and Barbra Streisand—Hunstein was also a remarkable urban photographer. This book brings together a substantial selection of views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, Harlem, and other neighborhoods of the city. Alternating between spectacular panoramas, street scenes, architecture, traffic, anonymous crowds, and moments of everyday life, he paints a portrait of a metropolis in the midst of transformation, at a time when New York was establishing itself as the world capital of culture and the arts. The photographs, in both black-and-white and color, reflect Don Hunstein’s humanistic perspective, attuned as much to the grandeur of skyscrapers as to the most ordinary details of urban life.
