HAAS (Ernst).
America. Photographed by Ernst Haas. Paris, Edita - Denoël, 1969.
Large oblong quarto (30 x 27 cm), illustrated publisher’s hardcover with a color photographic dust jacket. Numerous full-page color photographic reproductions. Text in French. 191 pp.
French first edition of one of the most famous photo books by Ernst Haas (1921–1986), a pioneer of modern color photography and a member of the Magnum Photos agency. Compiled from several years of travel across the United States, the book offers a deeply personal vision of America, far removed from mere documentary reporting.
The images, renowned for their chromatic intensity, sense of movement, and graphic composition, explore everything from Western landscapes, major cities, rodeos, beaches, and deserts to industrial towns and everyday American life. This album marks one of the first major demonstrations of the artistic possibilities of color photography.
One of Ernst Haas’s major works and a classic of 20th-century color photography.
Condition: good copy. Dust jacket shows some scuffing, a few superficial scratches, small tears at the corners, and a discreet, restored tear on the back cover. Hardcover in very good condition. Interior is in excellent condition; a few very slight pressure marks visible on the half-title page, without affecting the text or photographs.
