First edition of the first major monograph devoted to Fredi Guthmann (1911–1995), a singular figure who remained largely unknown for many years—a photographer, writer, poet, sailor, and adventurer. Born in Buenos Aires, Guthmann left Argentina in 1932 to embark on a life of voluntary wandering that took him to Oceania, India, Indochina, and then Paris, where he moved in prewar intellectual and artistic circles, notably those of André Breton, Emil Cioran, Pablo Picasso, and Julio Cortázar. Long unpublished, his photographic work is distinguished by a deeply personal perspective, blending documentary, poetry, and spiritual quest. The images, taken between the 1930s and the 1950s, reveal a rare sensitivity, nourished as much by travel as by existential reflection. The book features a vast collection of photographs, accompanied by letters, autobiographical texts, and poems that shed light on the complex personality of this extraordinary artist. This publication marks the rediscovery of an artist who long remained in the shadows but is now recognized as one of the most unconventional figures in humanist and travel photography of the 20th century.
