FRANCK (Martine). The Great Photographers of Magnum Photos. Paris: Hachette, “The Great Photographers of Magnum Photos” series, 1993. In-4, publisher’s hardcover with illustrated dust jacket. A monograph dedicated to Martine Franck (1938–2012), one of the leading figures of the Magnum Photos agency, whose humanistic perspective builds on the tradition of French documentary photography while asserting a personal style based on discretion, rigorous composition, and a deep attention to people. As the wife of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Martine Franck began developing her own independent body of work in the 1960s, focusing on landscapes as well as artists, traditional communities, theater, social institutions, and the elderly. Her photographs demonstrate an exceptional sense of the moment and a great economy of means, always prioritizing the accuracy of the gaze over spectacular effect. This volume brings together a significant selection of her most representative images, accompanied by a short biographical introduction and quotes from the photographer. The images cover France, Ireland, Tibet, China, the United Kingdom, and several series that have become emblematic of her work. The “Les grands photographes de Magnum Photos” collection, published by Hachette in collaboration with the Magnum agency, is now a standard reference series, sought after for the quality of its reproductions and its monographic approach. Condition: very good copy. Very slight signs of wear on the cover; interior is in pristine condition.
