World Photography Exhibition. What Is Man? [Paris], 1956–1957. Folio, illustrated hardcover by the publisher. A rare French edition of the famous international exhibition *The Family of Man*, conceived by Edward Steichen for the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Presented in Paris as part of the World Photography Exhibition, it brings together 555 photographs by 264 photographers from 30 countries, all centered on a single theme: “What Is Man?” The book reproduces the entire exhibition layout of this historic event, which brought together the greatest photographers of the 20th century: Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Doisneau, Bill Brandt, Werner Bischof, Eugene Smith, Brassaï, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Yousuf Karsh, Lucien Clergue, Ed van der Elsken, Eikoh Hosoe, and many others. Considered one of the most influential photography exhibitions of the 20th century, *The Family of Man* was seen by several million visitors and made a lasting contribution to the recognition of photography as a universal art form. Condition: The book is in good overall condition despite signs of wear on the binding (slightly worn caps and corners); the interior is clean. There is an old pencil annotation on a flyleaf (“double ??”).
