Catalog published on the occasion of the exhibition organized in Auxerre in 1984 by John Craven (1912–1999), a British art dealer based in France, renowned for his work as a gallery owner and talent scout. Founder of the Craven Gallery in Paris, he was one of the first in Europe to champion numerous modern artists and to promote a dialogue between contemporary Western art, so-called primitive arts, and photography. The exhibition perfectly reflects this eclectic vision. Paintings, sculptures, photographs, and works of tribal art are brought together in a curatorial journey where aesthetic connections take precedence over chronology. Photographic reproductions play a significant role and reflect Craven’s taste for visual correspondences between different artistic disciplines. Published in a limited edition, this catalog is now an interesting document on John Craven’s activities in the early 1980s and on his conception of collecting, based on the dialogue between civilizations and artistic forms.
