An important catalog of the exhibition held at the Musée Picasso in Paris from October 3 to December 31, 1995, dedicated to the multifaceted relationship Pablo Picasso maintained with the medium of photography throughout his career. Far from treating photography as a mere documentary tool, this volume demonstrates how it served as a true instrument of creation for Picasso. Photography accompanied his work from the Cubist years onward, documenting the creation of his works, fueling his reflections on representation, serving as a means to experiment with reproduction techniques, and inspiring engravings, collages, and photomontages, all while becoming a primary means of disseminating his image and that of his work. The catalog brings together several hundred historical photographs taken notably by Brassaï, Dora Maar, Robert Capa, David Douglas Duncan, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Lucien Clergue, André Villers, Gjon Mili, Arnold Newman, Edward Quinn, and René Burri, as well as numerous images from the Picasso Museum’s archives. Also featured are Picasso’s famous experiments with engraved photographic plates, his light drawings, his collaborations with photographers, portraits of the artist, views of his studios, and numerous works juxtaposed with their photographic documentation. Richly illustrated, the book is today one of the most comprehensive studies devoted to the relationship between Picasso and photography. Thanks to the quality of its illustrations, the abundance of archival materials, and essays by international scholars, it remains an indispensable reference for both the history of photography and Picasso studies.
