A volume dedicated to Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908–2004), a leading figure in 20th-century photography, co-founder of Magnum Photos, and originator of the concept of the “decisive moment.” The book traces the career of the man who revolutionized photojournalism through his sense of composition, his extraordinary intuition, and his ability to capture the moment when form and meaning coincide perfectly. Richly illustrated with black-and-white reproductions, the volume presents the major themes of his work: his early travels in Europe and Mexico, 1930s Spain, working-class France, the United States, India, China, and the Soviet Union, as well as his numerous photoessays produced after World War II. Added to these are several portraits of artists, writers, and political figures, demonstrating the breadth of his vision. The book also reproduces one of his most famous definitions of photography: “To photograph is to align the head, the eye, and the heart on the same line of sight. ” An excellent introduction to the work of the master of humanist photography, accompanied by numerous full-page reproductions.
