A volume dedicated to Robert Capa (1913–1954), one of the greatest war photographers of the 20th century and co-founder of Magnum Photos. This monograph traces his exceptional career, from the Spanish Civil War to World War II, including the Italian Campaign, the Allied landings in Normandy, the founding of the Magnum agency in 1947, and his final reportages in Indochina, where he was killed in 1954. The book brings together the images that made Capa a legend: the Spanish Civil War and the famous “Militiaman Shot Dead,” the fighting in China, the North African campaign, Sicily, Italy, the photographs taken on June 6, 1944, at Omaha Beach, scenes from the Liberation of Paris, as well as his portraits of figures from the art world, including Ingrid Bergman, John Steinbeck, Pablo Picasso, and Ernest Hemingway. Richly illustrated with black-and-white reproductions, this volume highlights the photographer’s closeness to his subjects and his deeply human approach to photojournalism, summed up by his now-famous maxim: “If your photos aren’t good enough, you aren’t close enough.” Numerous full-page photographic reproductions.
