BUCOVICH (Mario von). Berlin 1928: Portrait of a City. Foreword by Alfred Döblin. Afterword by Hans-Werner Klünner. Paris, Hazan, [circa 1990]. Large quarto, publisher’s hardcover with illustrated dust jacket. A remarkable reprint of the famous album *Berlin*, originally published in 1928, one of the most important photographic records of Berlin during the Weimar Republic. The photographs by Mario von Bucovich (1884–1947) offer an exceptional view of the German capital at the height of its modernity, capturing with remarkable aesthetic mastery the architecture, major thoroughfares, working-class neighborhoods, transportation, cafés, shops, and daily life in this rapidly changing metropolis. The book is prefaced by Alfred Döblin’s famous foreword, written for the original edition, and supplemented by an afterword by Hans-Werner Klünner, which places these images in their historical and artistic context. Extensive iconography in heliogravure reproducing the entire famous 1928 photo essay. Condition: a very good copy despite very slight foxing and soiling on the dust jacket; interior in excellent condition.
