Paris 1931–1952, held at the Musée Carnavalet from December 1, 1987, to January 31, 1988. The first major French retrospective dedicated to Ilse Bing (1899–1998), a leading figure in modern photography, often dubbed the “Queen of the Leica.” Having settled in Paris in 1930, she developed a body of work deeply influenced by the Nouvelle Vision, favoring low-angle shots, daring compositions, and graphic explorations of architecture, reflections, and movement. The catalog traces the photographer’s two decades in Paris, from the avant-garde of the 1930s through her exile in 1941, before exploring the final images she took in Paris after the war. The reproductions include, in particular, her famous views of the Eiffel Tower, Montparnasse, Parisian streets, dancers, and cafés, as well as numerous portraits and scenes of daily life. The book is now considered one of the earliest references dedicated to Ilse Bing prior to the international rediscovery of her work in the 1990s. Condition: very good copy.
