The first major French monograph devoted to Diane Arbus (1923–1971), published shortly after her death and adapted from the now-legendary book published by Aperture, an American foundation co-founded by Minor White. The book brings together the photographs that definitively established Arbus as one of the major figures in 20th-century photography: portraits of children, twins, circus performers, marginalized people, drag queens, giants, American families, and anonymous individuals encountered on the streets of New York. Rejecting any form of idealization, Diane Arbus developed a direct approach, with a psychological intensity rarely matched, that permanently transformed the history of the photographic portrait. The collection includes several of her most famous images, notably *Identical Twins, Roselle, New Jersey* (1967), reproduced on the cover, which has become one of the most iconic photographs of the 20th century.
