Catalog of the major exhibition organized by the Historical Library of the City of Paris dedicated to Alliance Photo, the most important French photographic agency of the interwar period. Founded in 1934 by Maria Eisner, the agency brought together several of the greatest humanist and documentary photographers of its time: Pierre Verger, René Zuber, Denise Bellon, Pierre Boucher, Émeric Feher, Ergy Landau, Ylla, Brassaï, Pierre Jahan, François Kollar, Germaine Krull, André Kertész, Eli Lotar, Man Ray, and Henri Cartier-Bresson, among others. It played a fundamental role in the international dissemination of modern photojournalism before it was dissolved on the eve of World War II. Richly illustrated with black-and-white reproductions, the catalog traces the agency’s history, its operations, its photographers, its publications, and its decisive influence on the birth of modern photojournalism. The texts by Thomas Michael Gunther, the exhibition’s curator, and Marie de Thézy, curator of the photography collections, are based on extensive archival research. Condition: good copy.
